Temple Israel and the International Shabbat Committee invite you to attend
“The Jews of Venezuela”

an International Shabbat Dinner and Service
Dr. Marcos Szomstein, Guest Speaker
Friday, March 12, 2010. Dinner: 6:00 PM. Service: 7:30 PM.  
Currently, there are more than 35,000 Jews living in Venezuela, with more than half living in the capital Caracas. Venezuelan Jewry is split equally between Sephardim and Ashkenazim. All but one of the country's 15 synagogues are Orthodox.

About Dr. Marcos Szomstein:

Dr. Szomstein was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on February 10, 1966, while his father, an MD, was doing his training in rehab medicine. Both of his parents were born in Venezuela. They lived in New York for two years and then they moved back to Caracas when he was 2 years old. He attended a Hebrew day school for elementary and high school, and graduated with a medical degree at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. When he was 25 years old, he moved to Philadelphia for his surgical training at Graduate Hospital, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. There he met his future wife Rebecca Wein, RN. They got married in Delaware in 1995 on his last year of General Surgery residency.  They move to Grand Rapids, Michigan for his Colon and Rectal fellowship where they had their first daughter, Raquel. In 1997 they moved to Miami, FL where he is in private practice doing exclusively Colon and Rectal Surgery. He performs surgery at Baptist, South Miami, Doctors and Mercy Hospital. They had two more children Jeannie who is 11 years old and Isaac who is 7.
