Temple Israel of Greater Miami has always believed that education and community engagement are at the heart of tikkun olam — repairing the world. That commitment recently found a meaningful expression through a collaboration with The Furman Literacy Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering underserved communities through access to books and the joy of reading.
Founded by Jack Furman, President & Co-Founder, The Furman Literacy Project has made remarkable progress since its launch in January 2023. The organization has established and maintains 19 Little Free Libraries throughout underserved neighborhoods in Hallandale Beach, Florida. These community libraries now serve more than 2,000 patrons each month, offering free access to thousands of books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.
When Jack reached out to Temple Israel’s leadership, his mission resonated deeply. Temple Israel, with its long-standing legacy of educational advocacy and social justice, proudly stepped forward to support this important cause. Our congregation donated our Children's Book Collection to the families who need them most — sparking imagination, learning, and opportunity.
Jack shared that partnerships like this are essential to the project’s success:
“Temple Israel’s support has a direct impact. Every book donated represents a doorway opened — a chance for a child to dream bigger, learn more, and build confidence through reading.”
The Furman Literacy Project continues to grow its reach by expanding its Little Free Library network, curating multilingual collections, and developing community literacy programs such as reading groups, mentorship initiatives, and educational workshops.
Temple Israel is proud to have played a small part in this growing movement to combat book deserts and promote literacy as a fundamental right. Together, we are helping build a future where every child has access to stories that inspire and empower.
